Controversies surround Bobrisky's win as Best Dressed Female

Many people have questioned whether it's appropriate to honour a transgender woman with an award that is traditionally given to women.

A storm of controversy has erupted on social media following the announcement that Nigerian socialite, Bobrisky was named “Best Dressed Female" at a recent movie premiere, therefore, going home with a cash prize of ₦1million.screenshot_20240327_002051

Many have questioned the choice, citing Bobrisky's gender identity as a transgender woman. Some have argued that the award should have been given to one of the female actresses who attended the event.

Portable

In a post on Instagram, Portable, a Nigerian streets-hop singer, expressed his dismay at the award and the "artificial" Bobrisky. He questioned why the women at the event were not recognized. 

Portable went on to say that giving the award to Bobrisky was disrespectful to the female actresses who were at the premiere, and he felt that their efforts were being "watered down."

Dayo Amusa

Nollywood actress, Dayo Amusa, who was also at the premiere, shared a similar sentiment, expressing her disappointment with the judges' decision in a video. She stated that she had walked out of the event in protest. She questioned what message this sends to women about their value and worth.
