THE Department of History and International Studies in theFaculty of Arts at Lagos State University (LASU) organised a colloquium on Thursday, March 28 2024, to honour two retiring professors, Prof. Modupeolu Faseke and Prof. Oladele Adeoti.
The colloquium took place at the Aderemi Makanjuola Lecture Theatre on the main campus in Ojo, Lagos.
While speaking at the event, Prof. Taiwo M. Salisu, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, who was represented by Professor Isaac Yekini-Ajenifuja, expressed appreciation to the Department for recognising the retiring professors, describing them as individuals of great honour.
The Dean acknowledged that the event was held to acknowledge the hard work of the two retiring professors, who have made a significant impact on the University and the field. He stated, "...they are icons to recognise in their professions and have immensely contributed to the growth of the Faculty."
On his part, Prof. Adewunmi J. Falode, the Head of the Department of History and International Studies, expressed gratitude to the retiring professors for their dedication and to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, for her continuous support. He also thanked the Vice-Chancellor for the financial and material support that contributed to the success of the event.
The colloquium featured two speakers. Professor Ademola Ajayi from the Department of History at the University of Ibadan delivered a paper titled "Ezekiel Oladele Adeoti: The Career and Scholarship of a Nigerian Historian." He highlighted Professor Adeoti's contributions to teaching, research, and community service, emphasising his impact on societal development.
Prof. Olufunke Adeboye from the Department of History and Strategic Studies at the University of Lagos presented a paper titled "Celebrating an Amazon @ 70: Prof. Modupeolu Faseke." She praised Prof. Faseke's fruitful and fulfilling career, marked by hard work, diligence, and commitment. Prof. Adeboye acknowledged Prof. Faseke's selfless service to the academic, church, Nigerian, and global communities, which has earned her recognition and awards.
The retiring professors, Prof. Modupeolu Faseke and Prof. Oladele Adeoti, expressed their gratitude to God, the Department, and the guest speakers for their contributions to the success of the event.
The colloquium concluded with the presentation of awards to the retiring professors and several senior members of staff in the Department.
Additionally, past members of the Department, including Prof. Hakeem Danmole, Prof. Siyan Oyeweso, Dr Charles Alade, Late Professor Ogunremi, Late Prof. Kunle Lawal, and Late Dr (Mrs) Abosede Oguntola were recognised and appreciated with awards.
