LAGOS State University, Directorate of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship (LASU DSDE) recently organised an orientation programme for the newly admitted full-time degree Entrepreneurship students for the 2023/2024 academic session.
The event occurred on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at the Buba Marwa Auditorium on the main campus in Ojo, Lagos.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Administration, Prof. Omotunde Boyo, emphasised the importance of entrepreneurship for the students' economic empowerment. The programme was to provide hands-on training in various entrepreneurship skills and to also nurture and incubate students' entrepreneurial ideas.

Acting Director, DSDE, Dr Habeeb Sanni, outlined the economic challenges facing the country and the need for Universities to focus on producing graduates who can be employers of labour. The Directorate offers various entrepreneurship skills such as Event Planning, Bag Making, and Makeup and Cosmetics, among others, to groom students to be entrepreneurs.

Guest Speaker, Engr. Olubayo Akinwunmi, CEO/MD of Sedav Projects and Construction Services Limited, discussed the meaning of entrepreneurship, the benefits of being an entrepreneur, and the steps to achieve significance in life. He encouraged students to identify their business passion, sharpen their skills, and focus on making a difference.

Other speakers at the event included Dr Olawunmi Buraimoh, founder of WOGEFI and Mr Friday Nwokolo, National Sales Manager at FCMB. Mr Nwokolo made two students brand ambassadors of FCMB and credited their newly opened accounts with twenty thousand naira each.
Facilitators at the orientation programme enlightened students on the various vocational skills available for training. The programme was a significant step towards equipping students with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in the entrepreneurial world.
