LASU inaugurates new STEM Laboratory

LASU's relentless pursuit of excellence in STEM education continues to thrive with the unveiling of the LASU-ACEITSE STEM Laboratory, further solidifying its commitment to providing quality education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

A significant milestone was reached on Monday, May 6, 2024, as Lagos State University (LASU) officially inaugurated the newly completed Lagos State University Africa Centre of Excellence for STEM Education (LASU ACEITSE) Laboratory at its main campus in Ojo.

The inauguration ceremony was led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, who expressed her pride and satisfaction in the STEM Laboratory.

Prof. Olatunji-Bello credited the success of the project to the strategic decisions made by the University, with special mention to Prof. Emeritus Peter Okebukola, the Pioneer Director of LASU-ACEITSE, for his contribution in elevating LASU to a global standard. The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the importance of the laboratory, which has significantly increased ACEITSE's rating from 18% to 75%, fulfilling a promise made to the University community.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Director of LASU-ACEITSE, Prof. Rasheed Sanni, expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and her team for their unwavering support. He encouraged students to utilise the state-of-the-art STEM Laboratory and other facilities to enhance their education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The laboratory is equipped for Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and ICT, providing students with practical experiences to enrich their learning.

In a goodwill message, Emeritus Prof. Peter Okebukola commended the University management and academic staff for their dedication to advancing STEM education. He emphasised the importance of equipping students with scientific skills and technology for the future, praising Prof. Sanni for bringing the vision of the laboratory to life. 

Also present at the inauguration was the National Coordinator of ACE Impact, Nigeria, Dr Joshua Atah, who lauded the leadership and support of the University in the successful completion of the project. He encouraged ongoing capacity building to ensure the sustainability of the STEM Laboratory and related initiatives.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was led by the Vice-Chancellor, accompanied by principal officers and dignitaries, officially declaring the STEM Laboratory open for use. The facility consists of four STEM Laboratories, classrooms, and offices, providing a conducive environment for practical learning and research.

The event was attended by members of the LASU Management Team, Emeritus Prof. Peter Akinsola Okebukola, the ACEITSE Team, students, project contractors, and well-wishers.
