Prof. Babajide Olufemi Elemo of Sciences retires after 40 years

ON Thursday, March 7, 2024, Distinguished Professor Babajide Olufemi Elemo, FNIFST, FIPAN, bid farewell to his esteemed career at Lagos State University with a valedictory lecture titled "From Foundation to Future: An Odyssey of a Biochemist's Four Decades at the Lagos State University."

After 40 years of meritorious service, Prof. Babajide Elemo officially retired from the University on Saturday, March 9, 2024.

The valedictory lecture took place at the executive class, 3-in-1 Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Education, Main Campus, Ojo, Lagos. The event was graced by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, who congratulated Prof. Babajide Elemo for his remarkable contributions to the academic community.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Administration, Professor Adenike Omotunde BOYO, the VC praised Prof. Elemo's unwavering commitment to scientific inquiry and his inspirational impact on students and colleagues.

During his lecture, Professor Elemo shared insights into his journey, from his early days as a professional disc jockey to becoming the first LASU-grown Professor of Biochemistry. He highlighted his role as the Acting Head of the Biochemistry unit and his leadership in supervising the University's first Ph.D. degree holder in Biochemistry.

Prof. Elemo's accomplishments include his Presidency and Chairmanship of the Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFST) and various contributions to research and product development, such as the design of Capsicum Oleoresin Extraction Unit and the development of toothpaste for sensitive teeth.

In his closing remarks, Prof. Babajide Elemo appreciated his mentors, colleagues, friends, and family members for their support throughout his career. The event was marked by goodwill messages, prayers, and a gift presentation from the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Professor Moses Akanbi.

University Management officials, including the University Registrar, Mr Emmanuel A. FANU, and the University Bursar, Mr Babatunde Olayinka, along with other dignitaries graced the occasion.

The valedictory lecture concluded with pictures and a reception at the Femi Gbajabiamila Conference Centre, celebrating the remarkable career of Professor Babajide Olufemi Elemo and his invaluable contributions to Lagos State University.
