Shedding light on mental health issues among undergraduates

Depression is a prevalent mental health concern among undergraduate students, impacting their academic performance, personal well-being, and overall college experience. DEPRESSION often leads to difficulties in concentration, memory, and motivation, making it challenging for students to engage effectively in their coursework (Storrie et al., 2010). A study by Ibrahim et al. (2013) revealed a negative correlation between depression symptoms and academic performance among college students. The social environment of college can exacerbate feelings of loneliness and isolation for individuals experiencing depression.

According to Zivin et al. (2009), depression negatively affects social functioning, leading to strained relationships, decreased social support, and reduced participation in extracurricular activities. Although, undergraduates may face barriers when seeking help for depression. A study by Eisenberg et al. (2012) found that only a small percentage of college students with depression sought treatment, citing reasons such as stigma, lack of awareness about available resources, and concerns about confidentiality.

SUPPORT AND INTERVENTION FOR UNDERGRADUATES

Recognising the unique challenges faced by undergraduates, universities and colleges should implement various support systems and interventions to address depression on campus; such as counselling services. Most higher education institutions offer counselling services that provide individual and group therapy to students. These services aim to help students develop coping mechanisms, improve emotional well-being, and manage academic stress.

Screening programmes, such as online mental health assessments, can help identify students at risk of depression and connect them with appropriate resources. One study by Sorenson & Bolin (2013) demonstrated the effectiveness of online screening programs in identifying depression symptoms among college students.

Peer Support Programmes: Peer-led support initiatives, such as campus-based support groups and mentoring programmes, have shown promise in reducing feelings of isolation and promoting mental well-being among undergraduates.

Promoting Mental Health Awareness: Universities are increasingly focusing on mental health awareness campaigns to reduce stigma and provide students with information about available resources. These campaigns aim to create a supportive environment that encourages help-seeking behaviours.
