IN a landmark achievement, Maria Itunu Soniregun, a 200-level student from the Department of Philosophy at Lagos State University (LASU), has been sworn in as the fifth Speaker of the Lagos State Youth Parliament.
Notably, Soniregun makes history as the first female and youngest individual to hold this esteemed position.The inauguration ceremony took place on Monday, March 11 2024, marking a significant milestone in the youth leadership landscape of Lagos State.
Following her induction, Soniregun paid a courtesy visit to the office of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM.
Welcoming Soniregun to her office, Prof. Olatunji-Bello, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Olufunsho Omobitan, received the young leader.
While speaking at the meeting, Soniregun showed her appreciation for the opportunity to serve the State in such a prestigious capacity. Acknowledging the pivotal role of LASU in her journey, Soniregun attributed her success to the solid foundation and mentorship provided by the Iniversity and her lecturers.
She also commended the University Management for fostering an enabling environment for the growth and development of young leaders like herself.
Meanwhile, Prof. Oseni Taiwo Afisi, the Director of the Directorate of Special Interventions and a Professor in the Department of Philosophy at LASU facilitated the visit.He echoed Soniregun's sentiments, affirming the University's commitment to grooming future leaders.
In response, Prof. Omobitan extended heartfelt congratulations to Soniregun on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor and the entire University community. He encouraged her to uphold the values of integrity and excellence, emphasising the importance of being a worthy ambassador for LASU.
Also present to welcome Soniregun and her entourage were Dr Lateef Sekoni, Deputy Registrar, VCO, and Dr Lateef Salami, Special Assistant to the VC.
